Japanese Gamers Divided on Subtitles vs. Dubs
If you were to ask a Japanese gamer if they preferred to period of play Western-made games with Japanese subtitles operating room dubbed audio, the results would be a surprisingly even split.
Privation to know cardinal of the only surefire ways to start a flame warfare online (other than mailing Xbox 360 propaganda on a Sony fanboy assembly or vice versa)? Attend any active anime fan community, and station a thread about how you like gum anime dubs. Inside minutes, someone leave invariably respond calling you an idiot who prefers an obviously inferior and bastardized product. And person will respond to them, locution that some people just don't want to accept to read all of the dialogue, operating theatre need to watch it while they'rhenium cacophonic their attention. Before you roll in the hay it? Chaos has erupted.
Judging aside the miniskirt-controversy that erupted when it was declared that the English release of Final Fantasy XIII would not contain the Japanese audio, that same sentiment is prevalent in the gaming profession as well: Do we want our Japanese-ready-made games to come with subtitles, or do we want all the dialogue fully voiced? While we can argue that all solar day, it's interesting to consider the reverse: What cause the Japanese gamers prefer when Western-made games come out crosswise the Pacific?
A poll by videogame publisher Spike attempted to answer that question, and the results? Wellspring, the results were an well-nig even split: 49% preferred original audio frequency with Nipponese subtitles, while 47% favored full Japanese-nomenclature dubbing. Sol if you took a random Japanese gamer and asked him or her that same question, looks like the odds are even that it could go either way.
Clearly, this just means that more publishers should just include both subtitles and dubs along every localized game – with opinion so evenly cleft, why not fair let everyone choose to their orientation?
If I want to play Uncharted 2 in Nipponese, that should be my god-given justly, dammit!
